Information for Ramsey County Voters

Basic Election Information

Date and Hours of Voting:  The state general election will be held on Tuesday, November 2, 2010. All polling places in Ramsey County will be open from 7:00am to 8:00pm.

 

Time Off from Work to Vote:  State law requires employers to excuse their employees from work without loss of salary or wages in order to vote. It is not necessary to take vacation or personal leave to vote on Election Day.

 

Voting Locations:  Voters are assigned to vote at a specific polling place, based on the location of their residence. To find the location of your polling place, go to the Ramsey County Elections website:  www.rcelections.org or view the Vadnais Heights precinct map.

 

Assistance to Voters:  All polling places are fully accessible to elderly and disabled voters. A special ballot marking device is available in each polling place for voters who want assistance reading or marking their ballots.

Voter Registration on Election Day

 

To vote, Ramsey County residents must be:

 

          US citizen

          at least 18 years of age

          resident of Minnesota for at least 20 days

          resident of the precinct on Election Day

 

If you are not already registered to vote, you can register at your polling place on Election Day.  You need to register at your polling place if you:

 

          have never voted in Minnesota

          have not voted in the past four years

          have changed your name since last voting

          have changed your address since last voting

 

To register at the polling place, you need to show one of the following documents authorized by state law:

 

         valid Minnesota driver’s license, learner’s permit or Minnesota identification card (or a receipt for any of these documents) that includes your current address

         notice of late registration mailed to you by Ramsey County Elections

         oath of a registered voter in your precinct who can vouch for your residence in the precinct. Employees of nursing homes, shelters and certain other residential facilities may also vouch for persons who reside there.

          prior registration at another name or address in your precinct

          tribal identification card containing your name, signature, address and photo

 

College students may also use the following documents:

 

         current student fee statement containing your address in the precinct and one of the photo identification cards listed below in Group A

         current student identification card including your photo (if your college has provided a student housing list to Ramsey County Elections)

 

Voters lacking these documents may use a combination of one document from Group A and one document from Group B.

 

Group A - document must contain your name and photo

 

          Minnesota driver’s license or Minnesota identification card with a previous address

          U.S. passport

          U.S. military identification card

          student identification card from a Minnesota college

          tribal identification card that contains your signature

 

Group B - document must contain your name and address

 

          original bill for gas, electric, telephone, internet provider, satellite or cable TV, water, sewer or solid waste services

          rent statement that includes itemized utility expenses

          current student fee statement that contains the student’s address in the precinct

 

Note: statements must be dated within 30 days of the election. 

 

Voters who need an updated Minnesota driver's license or Minnesota identification card in order to register may obtain one at the following locations on Election Day

Absentee Voting

 

Absentee ballots are available to voters who:

 

          will be away from their precinct on Election Day

          have an illness or disability that prevents them from voting at the polling place

          are unable to vote on Election Day due to a religious observance

          are serving as an election judge in a precinct other than their own

 

Applications for absentee ballots may be obtained at the Ramsey County Elections office, at all suburban city halls, and on the Vadnais Heights website Absentee Ballot Application. Applications may be submitted in person, by mail, by fax or by email.

 

In-person absentee voting is available for all voters at the Ramsey County Elections office through November 1.  Normal office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 4:30pm. Suburban voters may vote by absentee ballot at their City Hall through
October 29
during regular office hours, on October 30 from 10:00am to 3:00pm and on November 1 until 5:00pm.

 

Special extended hours for in-person absentee voting will occur on the following schedule at the Ramsey County Elections office.

 
            Thursday, October 28       8:00 am - 8:00 pm.
  
            Friday, October 29            8:00am - 5:00pm

            Saturday, October 30      10:00am - 3:00pm

            Monday, November 1        8:00am - 5:00pm
